Fire extinguishers are pressure receptacles containing fire extinguishers (dry powder, carbon dioxide, water, foam, etc.), which are used to extinguish or control the initial fire. The Fire Services Department defines fire extinguishers and blankets as “hand-held fire extinguishers”.
Fire extinguishers are the same as fire extinguish ers. Hong Kong and the Chinese-speaking region are called fire extinguishers, Taiwan is known as fire extinguishers, and the English language is Fire Extinguisher.
Remember, hand-held fire extinguishers are only tools to handle initial fire. The fire spreads, smokes affect the sight, not with fire extinguishers, but with evacuations and alarms.
There are many people who think that fire extinguishers are enough, but different types of fire have to be used, not only wrongly, but also worse. For example, a water-fired cooking boiler can cause hot oil to burst, and water-fired electrical equipment is at risk.
| Category | Incendiary material | Common examples in Hong Kong | Applicable products | Don't use it. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Category A | Flammable solid | Paper boxes, woody, fabric, curtains, trash cans | Water, bubbles, dry powder | Carbon dioxide (inadequate cooling, flammable) |
| Category B | Flammable liquids | Gasoline, solvent, paint, water in heaven. | Bubbles, dry powder, carbon dioxide | Water |
| Category C | Flammable gas | Oil, gas. | Dry powder (closure first) | Don't force the fire until we turn off the gas. |
| Category D | Flammable metals | Magnesium, aluminium powder (industry) | Specialized metal dry powder | Water, bubbles, general dry powder |
| Category F | Cooking butter. | Cooking boilers, frying stoves. | Small cooking oil boilers with blankets or pan caps; commercial ovens with wet chemical extinguishers | Water agents (hot oil spills) |
| Electrical fire alarm | Electrical equipment | Tetsu, towboards, computers, air conditioning, distribution tanks | Carbon dioxide, dry powder (first turn off) | Water, bubbles. |
The Fire Services Department's Home Fire Safety Code specifically reminds that electrical fire should close the power main or remove plugs and refrain from the use of water or water-agent fire extinguish ers.

| Type | The scope of application described by the Fire Services Department | Strengths | Limits | Typical location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dry powder extinguishers | Most fire alarms, including electric fires or flammable liquids in combustion | Maximum scope of application, efficiency, cost economy, pressure table | Keep the powder clean. Cover the line when you spray it. | Homes, businesses, offices, parking lots, workshops |
| Carbon dioxide extinguishers | Fire, any flammable liquid in combustion, electronic instruments | No residues, no electrical conductor, friendly to precision equipment. | There's not enough cooling of deep solid fires; the jets are cold enough to shake the handle; the closed space is used for ventilation; it's heavy. | Server room, electrical room, machine room, laboratory |
| Water extinguishers | Paper, cloth, wood, etc. Solid fire type A | Good cooling. No chemical residue. | It's absolutely impossible to use electrical power with oil. | Schools, public corridors, boardrooms, paper warehouses |
| Popper fire extinguisher | Solid fires and flammable liquids | Foam cover liquid surface resistant to re-burning | It's not recommended for electrical devices. | Dining room, workshop where fuel solvents are stored |
| Fire blankets. | Light fires caused by burning cooking oil in the kitchen | It's the simplest operation. It's non-removable. | Only minor limited fire; light is usually one-off | Home kitchens, restaurants, winehouses. |
There are also clean gas fire extinguishers (no residues after use, mostly for electronics and archives) along with wet chemical fire extinguish ers (for F-type food oil fires). You can ask us. Fire protection circular No. 11 of the Fire Services Department also divides fire-fighting blankets into heavy (BS 7944, reusable, for use in licensed places) and light (BS EN 1869).
The greater the capacity, the harder it is, the more it is, the more it is, the more it is, the harder it is to operate. For homes, it is more realistic to be able to afford, to be well-attended, to be used by all.
