Home Fire Safety Essentials – Fire Extinguishers and Fire Blankets to Protect Your Family

To protect your family’s lives and property, every household should be equipped with basic home fire safety equipment as a precaution. Fire Station has selected the most suitable fire extinguisher and fire blanket sets for home use, so you can easily get prepared for home fire safety.

Essential Fire Safety Products for Your Home

Based on many years of experience serving households in Hong Kong, we recommend the following two fire safety devices as basic protection for every home. This combination covers the most common domestic fire scenarios, including kitchen oil fires, electrical short circuits, and fires involving paper and fabrics.

Fire blanket – Essential kitchen fire safety device for extinguishing pan fires

1.) Fire Blanket

2kg Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher – All-round home fire safety device suitable for multiple fire types

2.) 2kg Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher

Fire Blanket – Your First Line of Defence in the Kitchen

Fire blankets are an essential fire safety item for every household kitchen. One of the most common causes of home fires is cooking oil catching fire in a pan. In such cases, you must never use water to put out the fire, as it can cause the burning oil to splash and make the fire spread rapidly. The correct method is to cover the flames completely with a fire blanket to cut off the oxygen supply and extinguish the fire.

2kg Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher – All-round Home Fire Protection

The 2kg dry powder fire extinguisher is one of the most suitable fire extinguisher models for home use. Dry powder extinguishers can tackle Class A, B and C fires, covering almost all fire risks typically found in a household environment. With a moderate 2kg capacity, it offers strong firefighting performance while still being easy for family members to hold and operate.

Why Every Home Needs Fire Safety Equipment

According to Fire Services Department statistics, thousands of fire incidents occur in Hong Kong every year, and a significant proportion of them are domestic fires. Common causes of home fires include unattended cooking, faulty appliances, electrical short circuits, burning incense and candles, and children playing with fire. The first few minutes before the fire services arrive are critical. If your home is equipped with suitable fire extinguishers and fire blankets, small fires can often be extinguished before they spread, greatly reducing the risk to life and property.

Common Fire Risks at Home

    >Kitchen oil pan fires – Oil overheating during cooking and catching fire, best handled with a fire blanket >Electrical short circuits – Aged appliances or overloaded sockets causing wiring to short and ignite, best tackled with a dry powder extinguisher >Overheating chargers – Mobile phones, tablets and other electronic devices overheating while charging >Incense and candles – Open flames for worship or candles accidentally igniting nearby objects >Children playing with fire – Kids handling lighters or matches and causing accidental fires

Recommended Placement of Fire Safety Equipment at Home

Correct placement of fire safety equipment is equally important. We recommend the following setup for your home:

    >Fire blanket – Mount it on the wall near the kitchen entrance so it is easy to reach but not too close to the stove, to avoid being cut off by flames >Fire extinguisher – Place it near the main entrance or in a visible spot along the hallway so it is readily accessible along the escape route >Avoid placing fire extinguishers in hot, damp areas or under direct sunlight >Make sure all family members know where the fire safety equipment is located and understand the basic operating steps >Check regularly that the fire extinguisher pressure gauge remains within the green safe zone

How to Use a Home Fire Extinguisher

Stay calm in the event of a fire and follow these steps when using a dry powder fire extinguisher (remember the steps: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep):

    >Pull – Pull out the safety pin >Aim – Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire (not at the flames above) >Squeeze – Squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguishing agent >Sweep – Sweep the jet from side to side across the base of the fire until the flames are fully out

When using a fire blanket, hold the tabs or top edge to shield your hands, carefully place the blanket over the flames to completely cover the fire, and leave it in place to cut off the air supply until everything has cooled down. If the fire cannot be controlled, evacuate immediately and call 999 for emergency assistance.
